Chapter 14 Advanced Data Formatting

Introduction
Advanced Data For matting (ADF) is a means of customiz ing data before transmission to the host device. Edit scan
data to suit particular requirements.
To implement ADF, sca n a related seri es of bar codes, which begin on p age 14-8, or install the 123Scan utility (see
Chapter 11, 123Scan) which programs the scanner with ADF rules.

Rules: Criteria Linked to Actions

ADF uses rules to customize data. These rules perfor m det ailed actions when the dat a mee t s cert ain criteria. On e
rule may consist of single or multiple criteria applied to single or multiple actions.
For instance, a data formatting rule co uld be:
Criteria: When scan data is Code 39, lengt h 12 , an d da ta at the start position is the str i ng “129”,
Actions: pad all sends with zeros to length 8,
send all data up to X,
send a space.
Scanning a Code 39 bar code of 1 299X1559828 tra nsmits the follo wing: 00001299<sp ace>. If you scan a Cod e 39
bar code of 1299X15598, this rule is ignored because the bar code did not meet the length criteria.
The rule specifies the editing conditions and requirements before data transmission occurs.
NOTE If using the wand interface with the scanner, you cannot use ADF rules to format data.
