luma Thebrightness information in the video picture. T he luma signal amplitude
variesin proportion to the brightne ss of the video signal and corresponds
exactlyto the mono chrome picture.
luminance See luma.
LUT Lookup table. Tablecontaining values used to transform the gray-level
valuesof an image. For each gray-level value in the image, the
corresponding newvalue is obtained from the lookup table.

M (1) Mega,the standard metric pr efixfor 1 million or 10 6,whenusedwith
unitsof measure such as volts and hertz (2) Mega, the prefix for 1,048,576,
or 220, when used with B to quantify data or computer memory.
MB Megabyteof memory.
Mbytes/s A unit for data transfer that means 1 million or 106bytes/s.
memory buffer See buffer.
memory window Continuous blocksof memory that can be accessed quickly by changing
addresseson the local processor.
MSB Most significant bit.
MTBF Mean time between failure.
mux Multiplexer. A switching device with multiple inputs that selectively
connects one of its inputs to its output.

noninterlaced A video frame where all the lines are scanned sequentially, instead of
dividedinto two frames as in an interlaced video frame.
