8. Signal Tones

The signal tones used by the telephone system are described in the follow-

ing table. You will become familiar with these tones as you begin to use your

phone.

Signal

Tone

Meaning Signal Interval*

Dial tone

(Steady tone)

You can begin dialling

Ring-back

tone

The station you dialled is ring-

ing.

Busy tone The station you dialled is busy.

Transfer tone Your call is being held and

you can dial another station.

Confirmation

tone

(Very short beeps)

You have correctly set or

cancelled a system feature.

* The Signal Interval varies from country to country. These values are relevant for
