Recording
Recording Formats
When you insert a new, unused disc, the following
message appears. Since available functions differ
depending on the disc type, select a disc that best fits
your preferences.
DVD-RAM: Use after formatting the disc.
DVD-RW: When a new, unused DVD-RW disc is first
inserted, the message “Uninitialized Disc Do
you want to initialize this disc?” will be
displayed. If you select Yes, the disc will be
initially formatted in VR mode.
If you want to change the mode later, refer to
Formatting a Disc on page 105.
DVD-R: Formatting DVD is unnecessary and only Video
Mode Recording is supported.

DVD-RW(V mode)/-R

• Chapters will be created automatically when you finalize
recording on DVD-RW/-R discs in Video mode.
The chapter’s length (interval between chapters) varies
according to the recording mode.
• Simple editing (erasing titles/changing title name)

DVD-RAM/-RW(VR mode)

• This mode allows multiple editing functions (such as
deletion of the whole title, partial deletion of a title, etc.)
• Various editing options using a created Playlist.

Recording Mode
Select one of four recording modes by pressing the
REC MODEbutton repeatedly while the unit is in Stop
mode for the desired recording time and picture quality.
In general, picture quality improves as the recording time
decreases. In FR mode, the most suitable record mode
is adjusted automatically, according to remaining time on
the disc and length of the timer recording. This function is
selected only one mode in XP, SP, LPand EPmodes
and you can use this mode for timer recording.
Recording Mode Characteristic Recording Times
DVD-RAM/-RW/-R
XP Select when the Approx. 1 hour
(high quality mode) video quality is about 8.5 Mbps
important.
SP Select to record in Approx. 2 hours
(standard quality mode) standard quality. about 4.5 Mbps
LP Select when a long Approx. 4 hours
(long recording mode) recording time is about 2 Mbps
required.
EP Select when a longer Approx. 6 hours/
(extended mode) recording time is about 1.6 Mbps
required. Approx. 8 hours/
about 1.2 Mbps
FR For timer recording only Approx 1~6 hours
