AirLink MP595 / MP595W Modem User Guide

The MP modem also supports connections via IEEE802.11b/g (MP595 only). See Chapter 6 for more details.

Virtual serial port

The MP modem supports four virtual serial ports (VSPs). Three are reserved for internal use by the MP modem. The remaining VSP, which is called Sierra Wireless Application Interface 2, is assigned to a specific COM port that varies between users. This VSP can be used, for example, to send AT commands, or to run applications such as HyperTerminal.

Special MP modem modes such as GPS that are supported on a serial port are also available on the virtual port. For example, with the virtual port enabled, a mapping application on your computer that normally listens for GPS messages on a serial port listens for those same messages on the virtual port.

The MP modem VSPs are available on both USB and Ethernet interfaces. For information on enabling a virtual serial port, see the MP 3G Modems AT Command Reference manual (document #2130810).

VPN support for RNAP

This feature allows for the exchange of Remote Network Access Protocol (RNAP1) data between the MP modem and a remote server accessible only through a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. When using this feature, you must have 3G Watcher running on the computer.

The MP modem sends RNAP data over Ethernet or USB to 3G Watcher on the computer. 3G Watcher places the RNAP data in a User Datagram Protocol/Internet Protocol (UDP/IP) packet and sends it over the VPN connection to the server. When 3G Watcher receives a UDP/IP packet containing RNAP data over the VPN connection, it disassembles the packet and sends the RNAP data to the MP modem.

You can enable this option using 3G Watcher software or AT commands. See the 3G Watcher online help and the MP 3G Modems AT Command Reference manual (document #2130810) for details.

1.RNAP is a Sierra Wireless proprietary protocol that encapsu- lates the MTP data that is sent to and from the MP modem. It ensures that both the MP modem and remote host recognize the data packets. See The Monitoring and Tracking Protocol Guide on page 18.

MP595W, MP595 specifications

The Sierra Wireless MP595 and MP595W are robust industrial-grade multi-network routers designed to ensure reliable and high-speed connectivity in a wide range of applications. Both models leverage advanced technologies to meet the demands of IoT (Internet of Things), M2M (Machine-to-Machine), and remote network management, making them ideal for various sectors, including transportation, utility, and smart city initiatives.

One of the standout features of the MP595 and MP595W is their dual-SIM capability. This functionality allows users to connect to two different mobile networks simultaneously, providing added reliability and redundancy. In scenarios where one network experiences failures or inadequate performance, the router can seamlessly switch to the secondary SIM. This ensures continuous connectivity, which is crucial for critical applications where downtime can result in significant losses.

Both models support a full range of cellular technologies, including 4G LTE and 3G, enabling high-speed connections with the flexibility to adapt to different network conditions. The MP595W variant offers additional capabilities, including built-in Wi-Fi, allowing users to set up a local wireless network and connect multiple devices easily.

Furthermore, these routers feature advanced security mechanisms, supporting VPN (Virtual Private Network) protocols and firewall functionalities. This ensures secure data transmission and protects sensitive information from potential threats, making them suitable for enterprise-level applications.

The user-friendly management interface enables easy configuration and monitoring. Sierra Wireless provides comprehensive tools and APIs that facilitate remote management, allowing users to manage and update the router's settings from anywhere, thereby reducing maintenance costs and time.

The routers also come equipped with multiple Ethernet ports, allowing for direct wired connections to equipment and devices. This versatility makes them suitable for a variety of setups, from simple installations to more complex network configurations.

With their rugged design, the MP595 and MP595W are built to withstand harsh environmental conditions, making them perfect for outdoor deployments. They are designed to operate across a wide temperature range, ensuring consistent performance in extreme weather.

In conclusion, the Sierra Wireless MP595 and MP595W are powerful, versatile, and secure solutions for organizations needing robust mobile connectivity. Their advanced features and reliability make them indispensable in achieving seamless communication across various industrial applications.
