480i A shorthand way of referring to an interlaced NTSC signal, where “480” refers to the number of actual picture lines and “i” refers to Interlaced.

480p A shorthand way of referring to a progressive NTSC signal, where “480” refers to the number of actual picture lines and “p” refers to Progressive.
