Aspect Ratio The ratio of the video display’s width to its height. The two common aspect ratios used for video displays are 16:9 (1.78:1), also known as “widescreen”, and 4:3 (1.33:1), also known as “standard”.

CRT The Cathode Ray Tube is the original analog technology used in video displays. It is still used today in both direct-view displays as well as front and rear projection systems. Although the maximum light output levels are limited, CRT-based displays are unrivaled for their smoothness and ability to accurately reproduce fine gradations in dark areas of the image.

Component A video signal using three separate video components, for example RGB or YPbPr. Component signals may be either Interlaced or Progressive.

Composite An Interlaced video signal that combines brightness (black-and-white) information together with color information. Performance is reduced compared to Component video or S-Video, as the video signals cannot be perfectly separated again as required by the display device.

Compressed Audio To allow storage of more video information on a DVD, the digital audio soundtrack is compressed to take up less room. The PCM digital audio data is compressed by discarding data that is deemed to be of less importance. Various companies have developed proprietary schemes for reducing the
