A.With traditional chemical treatment plans, spas need to be drained and cleaned about every three months in order to remove residue and by-products that accumulates in the water. However, with an automatic bromine generator, the build-up of residue is minimal, and spa owners can go as long as a year without having to drain and refill their spas.

Q.How may hours per day will I have to operate my spa’s pump once I install an automatic bromine generator?

A.Most spas will operate at four hours of water circulation per day, but if you find that your dial is at a high setting but your bromine level is lower than desired, you might want to run the pump for up to eight hours per day. Remember that all spas are unique (due to different bathers, different loads, etc.). Within a short time, you will be able to determine the right circulate cycle for your particular spa. (Also note that in the event of a power outage, the filtration cycle will revert back to the factory default setting.)

Q.Now that I have an automatic bromine generator, do I sill have to check my spa’s chemistry?

A.Yes, definitely! You need to maintain proper pH and total alkalinity at all times, because pH has a direct relationship to the effectiveness of bromine to sanitize water.

Q.Why is there little or no bromine odor with the automatic bromine generator?

A.This is due to the electrolytic bromine generation process. The electronic field around the bromine- generating cell destroys “bromamines”, which are what cause the strong, objectionable odor (not bromine itself).

Q.Why does the display go to a minus sign every few minutes?

A.This indicator informs you that the polarity of the electrodes is changing every two minutes. This process is for the cleaning of the electrode cell to prevent any scale build-up on it.

Q.My automatic bromine generator lights up but I can’t get a bromine reading.

A.There are three reasons why you might not get a reading:

•It can take several days for the bromine level to stabilize because the water you put into your spa contains impurities that need to be neutralized, thereby using up the initial bromine that is generated. Refer to that section on how to resolve this problem.

•The TDS (total dissolved solids) count might be too high -- bromine production will be impaired when the TDS count exceeds 3500 ppm.

•The phosphate level might be too high -- bromine production can be impaired when the phosphate level exceeds 1125 ppb. Ask you dealer about products that reduce phosphates.

Q.My automatic bromine generator is wired in but it doesn’t light up.

A.Contact a certified electrician to examine your bromine generator and your spa.
