Troubleshooting the Diskette Drive Subsystem
Ifthe monitor displays a system error message indicatinga diskette drive problem
duringexecution of either the boot routine or the Dell Diagnostics,the problem may
becaused by any of the following conditions:
Thesystem configuration settings do not matchthe physical diskette subsystem
configuration.
Thediskette drive cable is not properly connectedor

is

faulty.
Anexpansion card is interfering with proper driveoperations.
Adiskette drive may be improperly configured.
Thediskettedriveisfaulty.
Thecomputer's power supply is not providingsufficient power for the drives.
The computer's dis kette drive logic is faulty.
Followthese steps to troubleshoot the diskettedrive subsystem:
1. Enter the System Setup program,and verify that the system is configured cor-
rectly for the Diskette DriveA setting.

2. If the system configurationsettings are incorrect, make the necessary correc-
tionsin the System Setup program, and then reboot the system.
3. Run the Diskette Drivestest group in the Dell Diagnostics to see whether the
diskettedrive subsystem now workscorrectly.

Didthe tests run successfully?
Yes . Ifyou were in the middle of another procedure, continue with the next step
in the procedure you were perfo rming.
No. Goto step 4.
4. Turn offthe system, including any attachedperipherals, and disconnect the sys-
tem from its electrica l outlet.

5. Remove the computer cover.
