Troubleshooting System Memory
A systemmemory problem can be a faulty dual in-line memory module (DIMM) or a
faultysystem board. If a random-access memory (RAM) error messageappears, the
systemprobably has a memory problem.
When youturn on or reboot the system,the <Caps Lock> and <ScrollLock> indica-
torson the keyboard should flash momentarily and then turn off.If Num Lock in
theSystem Setup program is set to On, the <Num Lock> indicator should flash
momentarilyand then remain on; otherwise, it should turn off.Abnormal operation of
these indicators can result from a defect ive DIMM in socket DIMM_ A.
Followthese steps to troubleshoot system memory:
1. Turn on the system, includingany attached peripherals.
Isthere an error message indicating invalidsystem configuration information
afterthe memory count is completed?
Yes . Go to step 2.
No.Go to step 10.
2. Enter the System Setup program and checkthe Sy stem Memory setting .

Doesthe amount of memory installed match the System Memory setting?
Yes . Go to step 10.
No.G o to step 3.
3. Turn off the system,including any attached peripherals,and disconnect the
powercable from the electrical outlet.

instructions at the front of this guide.
4. Remove the computer cover.
SeeRemoving the Computer Cover,earlier in this chapter.
5. Remove the support panel.
Turnthe two thumbscrews on the support panel and pullthe tabs on the right
sideof the panel out of the slots in the chassis.
6. Reseat the DIMMs in their sockets.
