Link AggregationLinkAggregationisamethodofgroupingmultiplephysicalportsonanetworkdevice
intoonelogicallinkaccordingtotheIEEE802.3ad‐2002standard.BecauseLink
Aggregationisstandardsbased,itallowsforautomaticconfigurationwithmanual
overrides(ifapplicable),andcanoperateon10Mbps,100Mbps,or1000MbpsEthernet
fullduplexports.Thusthenetworkadministratorcancombineagroupoffive100Mbps
portsintoalogicallink(trunk)thatfunctionsasasingle500Mbpsport.Aslongasthe
DFEmodulesagreeonwhichportsareinthetrunk,therearenoproblemswithlooping,
andtheSpanningTreecantreatthistrunkasasingleport.
Innormalusage(andtypicalimplementations)thereisnoneedtoenable/disableportsfor
LinkAggregation.Thedefaultvalueswillresultinthemaximumnumberofaggregations
possible.Iftheswitchisplacedinaconfigurationwithitspeersnotrunningtheprotocol,
noaggregationswillbeformedandtheDFEmoduleswillfunctionnormally(thatis,
SpanningTreewillblockredundantpaths).

Module Placement in a Matrix E7 ChassisIfyouwanttomix6x1xxx,6x2xxx,6x3xxx,and7H43xx‐xxseriesmodulesinthesame
Matrix E7chassis,itisnecessarytohaveaDFEmoduleinstalledsuchasthe4G4285‐49,
andalsofollowthemoduleplacementrulesdescribedin“DFEModulePlacementand
InstallationRules”onpage3‐3tosuccessfullybridgedatatraffictosomeorallmodulesin
theMatrix E7chassis.
FTM Bridge Function and Optional NEMThe4G4285‐49DFEmoduledoesnotsupportboththeFTMbridgingfunctionandan
optionalnetworkexpansionmoduleatthesametime.Withanoptionalnetwork
expansionmoduleinstalled,theFTMbridgingfunctionisdisabled.Ineitherofthese
cases,allportsofthe4G4285‐49remainactive.
