Figure 3.5 : Magnum 528’s internal jumpers for auto-negotiation ON or OFF

Note that auto-negotiation is an on-going process that can introduce changes in network operation at any time, whether intended or accidental. Getting an auto- negotiating network running properly once is not enough to make certain that it will continue to operate correctly indefinitely. Attached devices can and do change while the network is operating. In addition, there may be intermediate devices (such as media converters, which do not support auto-negotiation) in the cabling between the switched port and the rest of the network, requiring the switching port to be fixed in speed and mode in order to achieve and maintain the desired overall network operation.

Therefore, the default setting of fixed 100Mb speed with F/H manual selection (no auto-negotiation, copper ports) is generally desirable because it is a safe and a maximum-performance condition for the Model 528’s Fast Ethernet high speed ports.

See Section 4.4 for additional information on auto-negotiation functionality.
