Performance Considerations

The primary consideration with respect to EVM performance is the visibility of StorageWorks storage systems to the Management Appliance. The more storage that is visible, the more productive a single EVM network can become.

Too many visible StorageWorks storage systems, however, can cause slowed performance because of the automatic update feature within EVM. Therefore, EVM provides a means of controlling which storage systems remain visible to EVM following detection.

EVM automatically establishes the minimum predefined frequency of the detection-and-refreshcycle for gathering data from the visible StorageWorks storage systems. This minimum refresh rate can be manually modified to a larger value (for a longer refresh period) to best support the operational environment.

To limit the number of visible storage systems and manually set the refresh rate:

1.Browse to the Management Appliance (see “Browsing to the EVM Network” on page 7–9).

2.Verify or establish password control (see “Establishing Password Control” on page 7–4).

The OSM Home Page displays.

3.Browse to the EVM Home Page, using procedures in Chapter 7, “Browsing to the EVM Home Page” on page 7–12.

A new browser window opens with the EVM Resources tab open.

4.Click the Configuration tab.

The EVM Configuration screen displays, with the Save/Reload tab open.

5.Click the Available Subsystems tab (see Figure 9–1).

6.Uncheck any StorageWorks storage systems that you want to omit from EVM network visibility.

7.If desired, enter a number in the Minute detection rate box that is larger than the minimum rate.
