Before you can use the management server, you must make the software aware of the elements on your network. An element is anything on the network that can be detected by the management server, such as a switch. This is done through the discovery process. Discovery obtains a list of discovered elements and information about their management interface and dependencies. The management server can discover only elements with a suitable management interface. Refer to the support matrix for supported hardware.
NOTE: The term “element” is used in HP Storage Essentials to refer to a network device such as a switch. The term “system” is used in HP Systems Insight Manager. Both terms have the same meaning: a device on your network.
IMPORTANT: Information about HP Systems Insight Manager ( HP SIM), such as discovery instructions, are for HP SIM version 5.0.
Storage Essentials provides two types of discovery. Both types of discovery obtain for the most part the same information while letting you work in the user interface you prefer:
•Discovery from HP SIM - Lets you perform all of your discovery tasks within the framework of Systems Insight Manager. Use Discovery from HP SIM if you are familiar with the HP SIM interface. Use Discovery from HP SIM when you want to manage and monitor not only storage, but other elements on your network, such as printers, enclosures and racks.
•Discovery from HP SE - Lets you perform all of your discovery tasks within the framework of Storage Essentials. Use Discovery from HP SE if you are familiar with the HP SE interface. Use Discovery from HP SE if you want to manage and monitor only storage.
IMPORTANT: If you choose to discover your elements using the Storage Essentials (SE) interface, please keep in mind credential information is not shared with HP SIM. As a result, you are not able to perform tasks in HP SIM that require authentication if you used discovery from SE. You can manually enter credential information in HP SIM to allow rediscovery. See ”Differences Between HP SE and HP SIM Discovery” on page 16 for more information.
