Differences Between HP SE and HP SIM DiscoveryAs mentioned previously, discovery from HP SIM and HP SE provides similar results in that they gather information about your elements. You can use either form of discovery; however, keep in mind there are some differences and the discovery pages for HP SIM and HP SE are accessed using either the HP SIM interface or the HP SE interface depending on your choice of discovery.
•Accessing the Discovery pages for HP SIM or HP SE
To perform Discovery from HP SIM, you can use the First Time User Wizard or you can use the HP SIM Discovery command on the HP SIM home page Option menu (Options > Discovery).
To perform Discovery from HP SE, you use the Storage Essentials interface. From the HP SIM home page, select Tools > Storage Essentials > Home. The Storage Essentials home page opens in a separate web browser window. To view the HP SE Discovery pages, click Discovery in the
•Deleting an element - When you delete an element from Step 1, 2 or 3 of Discovery from HP SE, the element is deleted in Storage Essentials only. The corresponding element in HP SIM must be deleted manually.
•Building the topology - Discovery from HP SE lets you quickly build the topology (Step 2) in System Manager without running Step 3, which can take several hours.
•Credentials are not passed from HP SE to HP SIM - If you use Discovery from HP SE, the IP address is given to HP SIM but not the credentials, such as the user name and password for discovering the element. Because HP SIM does not have the user name and password, you must provide the user name and password again for these systems if you decide to use Discovery from HP SIM. Credentials are passed from HP SIM to HP SE, so if you perform Discovery from HP SIM, the user names and passwords for discovering those elements appear in HP SE.
