SECTION 1 OPERATION

1-1 INTRODUCTION

The Fire Alarm Back-up UPS1 481 provides an exceptional l ev el of load protection and
monitoring capabilities. Th e c rit ic al l oad is provided with conditio ne d, regulated, computer grad e
power at all times. There is co mp let e electrical isolation between th e in put and output voltage of
the UPS.
When input power to the UPS is los t , s uc h as d uring a power outage, the UPS aut omatically
draws power from its internal bat t e ry supply. The critical load receiv es only clean sine wave
power. There are no disturbanc es o r power interruptions on the out p ut when the UPS transfers
to battery operation. Transfers t o and from battery operation are “ No Break” transfers. The
internal maintenance-fre e bat t e ries provide ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes (depending upon
model) of backup power. Th e 10 a nd 15 kVA models have separ ate battery cabinets.
Upon restoration of input po wer, the UPS automatically resu mes normal operation. Also the
UPS immediately begins to r ec h arge the batteries.
The Fire Alarm Back-up UPS1481 provides co mpr ehens ive mon itori ng capa biliti es. In addition
to the LED indicators and audib le alarm, the Fire Alarm Back-u p UPS1481 contains a 160
alpha-numeric display and t ouc h pad. UPS status, event histo ry , an d operating parameters
(such as input, output voltage) ar e readily available to the oper at or v i a the touch pad and
display. The UPS 1481 cont ains , as s t an dard features, an AS/400 interf ace, RS-232 interface,
and printer interface.
The Fire Alarm Back-up UPS1 481 is an on—line single phase U PS available in output ratings of
3, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15kVA. T he UPS 1481 is U.L. listed under UL148 1. The Fire Alarm Back-
up UPS1481 is available wit h inp ut voltages of 120 and 240/VA C and output voltages of
120/240/VAC. This informat io n is provided on the name plate locat ed on the rear panel of the
UPS. See Appendix A for a com plete listing of the UPS 1481 sp ec ifications.

1-2 BENEFITS

The Fire Alarm Back-up UPS1 481 is designed to fit the needs of v irt u ally all power conditioning
and UPS applications. It has be en s pecifically designed to po wer all forms of modern data
processing, communicati on, a nd process control equipment . The Fire Alarm Back-up UPS1 48 1
does not require any decoratin g as other UPS products may wh en powering 100% electronic
loads including switch—m od e power supplies.
The Fire Alarm Back-up UPS1 481 protects sensitive electric al e quipment, such as computer
systems, telecommunication networks, LA Ns and multi—user systems, and instrumentation
