Flanger
A Flanger is a common effect found in most e ffect processors. Flanging grew from a studio t rick where engineers
would play identical material on two ta pe decks, then make slight changes to t he play speed of the two tape machines
by dragging their hand on the flange s of the tape reels. The result is a “wooshing ” sound that can be compared to a jet
flyover.
< Enable Button
Natur ally, this button turns the Flanger on and of f.
< Mix Knob and Routing Button
Unlike the two effects discussed so far, the Flanger works b est with the Routing button set to Inse rt mode. This
allows you to completely replace the origin al audio signal with the flanged version (by turni ng this knob fully
clockwise) in order to emphasize the ef fect.
Note: The effect will still wor k in Send mode, but it will be less pronounced.
< Tweak Knob and Button
The func tion of the Flanger’s Tweak knob is determined by the state of t he Tweak button:
» When the Tweak button is off, the Flanger will b e in Manual mode. The Tweak knob will then control the
delay time of the Flanger. When the knob is countercl ockwise, the Flange effect wi ll be very tight. As the
knob is turned clockwise, the e ffect will become more dramatic and met allic in nature.
» If the Tweak button is on, the Flanger will be in Aut omatic mode. In this mode, the delay tim e for
the Flanger will be adjusted automatic ally. The Tweak knob will then set the rate of the automatic
adjustment—turning the k nob clockwise will increase the modul ation rate.
Phaser
A Phaser is a somewhat mellower version of the Flan ger. Like the Flanger, a Phaser works on the principle of mixing two
identical audio sources together. However, unlike a Flanger, the timing differe nce between the two audio sources is very
small. The result is that some of the frequen cies in the song will be removed or “cancelled out.” Some peop le describe
this sound as a “wind tunnel” effec t.
< Enable Button
This but ton will turn the effect on and off.
< Mix Knob and Routing Button
Like the Flanger effect above, the Phaser works b est with the Routing button set to Inser t mode. This allows you
to completely replace the original aud io signal with the phased version (by turning t his knob fully clockwise) in
order to emphasize the effect .
Note: The effect will stil l work in Send mode, but it will be less pronounced.
< Tweak Knob and Button
The func tion of the Phaser’s Tweak knob is determined by the state of t he Tweak button:
» When the Tweak button is off, the Phaser wil l be in Manual mode. The Tweak knob will then control the
phase of the effect.
» If the Tweak button is on, the Phaser will be in Aut omatic mode. In this mode, the phase wi ll be adjusted
automatically. The Tweak knob will then set the rate of t he automatic adjustment—tur ning the knob
clockwise will increase the modula tion rate.
