To scan a bar code, center the symbol in any orientation within the aiming pattern. Be sure the entire symbol is
within the rectangular area formed by the cross pattern.

The device can also read a bar code presented within the aiming pattern but not cen tered. The top examples in
Figure 3-4 show acceptable aiming options, while the bottom examples can not be d ecoded.

Laser Aiming

In hand-held mode, the laser device projects a laser line by default. Ensu re the scan line crosses every bar and
space of the symbol.

The aiming pattern (or laser line) is smaller when the device is closer to the sym bol and larger when it is farther
from the symbol. Scan symbols with smaller bars or elements (mil size) clos er to the device, and those with larger
bars or elements (mil size) farther from the device.
The device beeps to indicate that it successfully decoded the bar code. For mo re information on beeper and LED
definitions, see Table 3-1 and Table 3-2.
