5.6.2 Serial connection of output channels
Connectin
g
output channels in series provides a
g
reater volta
g
e capability than
can be obtained from a sin
g
le output channel. In principle, you can put more than
two output channels in series. However, there is the limitation that the total
maximum volta
g
e of each terminal may not exceed 240V with respect to the
g
round.
Output channels in serial confi
g
urations can operate in either Constant Volta
g
e
(CV) or in Constant Current (CC).
CV OPERATION
For CV operation all output channels must be in the CV mode. Pro
g
ram the
current settin
g
of all output channels to the desired current limit point. Then
pro
g
ram the volta
g
e settin
g
of each output channel, so that the sum of all
volta
g
es equals the total desired operatin
g
volta
g
e. The simplest way to
accomplish this is to pro
g
ram each output channel to an equal part of the total
desired operatin
g
volta
g
e, e.
g
., three output channel settin
g
s of 25 V in series
provide 75 V.
CC OPERATION
For CC operation the current settin
g
of each output channel must be
pro
g
rammed to the desired operatin
g
current. The sum of the volta
g
e settin
g
s
determines the volta
g
e limit points. As an example, consider two output
channels in series (refer also to section 5.6.2.1). Pro
g
ram the volta
g
e settin
g
of both output channels to one half of the total volta
g
e limit point. At load
volta
g
es < 1/2 of the total volta
g
e limit point, one output channel will operate
in the CC mode. At load volta
g
es > 1/2 of the total volta
g
e limit point, the output
channel that was in the CC mode will chan
g
e to the CV mode, while the other
output channel will re
g
ulate the current in the CC mode and provide the
balance of the volta
g
e required by the load.
Note that the total volta
g
e over the load is the sum of the individual readback
output volta
g
es, provided the load volta
g
e < 1/2 of total volta
g
e limit point.
WARNING: To
g
uarantee the safe use of the power supply, the total
maximum volta
g
e at each terminal must not exceed 240V with
respect to
g
round.
There are two ways of sensin
g
the load when connectin
g
output channels in
series, i.e., local sensin
g
and remote sensin
g
.
