Disk Segment

The analogy for a disk segment is to a traditional disk partition, such as DOS, Windows, etc.

Domain Name Service (DNS) Server

Since the Internet, as well as most Local Area Networks use TCP/IP, they do not understand domain names. Rather, these networks only understand Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. The DNS server runs software that allows domain names to be converted into IP addresses. So if a user were to type www.storageflex.com in the address field of an Internet browser, a DNS server would convert it to the proper IP address, which in this case is 168.144.128.216. In the same manner in which DNS servers are used for the Internet, they can also be used for Local Area Networks, so that computer names, rather than IP addresses can be used to share files. However, in a windows only network, a Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) Server is used to convert computer names to IP addresses.
