The REN assigned to each terminal equipment provides an indication of the maximum number of terminals allowed to be connected to a telephone interface. The termination on an interface may consist of any combination of devices subject only to the requirement that the sum of the Ringer Equiva- lence Numbers of all the devices does not exceed five.

For safety, ensure that the electrical ground of the power utility, the telephone lines and the metallic water pipes are connected together. Do NOT attempt to make such connections; rather, contact the appropriate elec- tric inspection authority or electrician. This may be par- ticularly important in rural areas.
