7: PoE (Power over Ethernet) Support

Power over Ethernet, or PoE, technology describes a system to transmit electrical power, along with data, to remote devices over standard twisted-pair cable in an Ethernet network. This technology is useful for powering IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, network cameras, remote network switches, embedded computers, and other appliances where it would be inconvenient, expensive (mains wiring must often be done by qualified and/or licensed electricians for legal or insurance reasons) or infeasible to supply power separately.

The standard IEEE 802.3af describes two types of devices: Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Devices (PD). Power sourcing equipment provides power to the powered devices. The network camera represents the powered device, whereas a PoE Injector is a PSE device. The Pro Series Network Camera models, except for model 550710, are IEEE 802.3af standard PoE compliant. They can be used with any IEEE 802.3af-compliant PoE injector.

NOTE: Camera model 550710 can only be powered over Ethernet using a special accessory.

On the next two pages, you can find an overview of available PSE equipment from INTELLINET NETWORK SOLUTIONS. NOTE: The information is subject to change.
