Cable Test

Cable Test determines the VOP of a cable if the length of the cable is known. This simple method only requires knowing the length of cable. The length of the cable is entered into the CE4000 and the unit calculates the appropriate VOP for that length of cable under test.

Since the VOP is directly proportional to the distance measurement, a 1% error in the VOP will project a 1% error in the distance measurements. Determining an accurate VOP is critical to the accuracy of the distance measurements. When possible, choose a test cable of at least 100 feet (30m) to reduce calculation errors. Longer cables increase the accuracy, but may be difficult to measure accurately. Also avoid cable on reels, since the coiling slightly affects the VOP. Lengths marked on spools are often inaccurate.

To determine the VOP of a cable using the CE4000, select the Setup icon from the Main Menu or press the Setup key. Next, select the Cable Test icon and press enter. The screen shown in Figure 2-8 is displayed.
