La hipertensión (presión arterial alta) es el diagnóstico que se da cuando los resultados de las mediciones de la presión están constantemente por encima del nivel normal. Se sabe que la hipertensión no tratada puede resultar en accidentes cerebrovasculares, ataques cardíacos u otras enfermedades. la medicación adecuada indicada y supervisada por el médico. La Asociación Americana del Corazón hace las siguientes sugerencias en cuanto al estilo de vida, para evitar o controlar la hipertensión:

No fume.

 

Hágase exámenes médicos periódicos.

 

Consuma menos sal y grasas.

 

 

Mantenga un peso saludable.

 

Controle la presión arterial

¿POR QUÉ TOMARSE LA PRESIÓN ARTERIAL EN CASA?

Ahora se sabe que, en muchos individuos, las lecturas de la presión arterial tomadas en un consultorio médico o un hospital pueden resultar más elevadas, a causa del miedo y la ansiedad. Esta reacción se llama comúnmente “hipertensión de consultorio”.

En todo caso, la medición hecha por uno mismo en casa sirve como complemento de las lecturas realizadas por el médico y proporciona un historial de presión arterial más exacto y completo. Cuando llevo el monitor a un consultorio médico, ¿por qué la medición que obtengo es diferente a la que obtiene un médico o enfermero?

Es posible que el profesional esté utilizado un brazalete de otro tamaño. El tamaño de la almohadilla interna del brazalete es fundamental para que la medición sea precisa. Esto puede arrojar una lectura diferente. Un brazalete demasiado grande producirá una lectura menor que la presión arterial correcta; uno demasiado pequeño producirá una lectura mayor que la presión arterial correcta. La diferencia entre las mediciones también puede ser producto de otros factores.

CLAVES PARA UN CONTROL SATISFACTORIO:

La presión arterial oscila durante el día. Le recomendamos que tenga constancia en la rutina diaria de mediciones:

•Tómese la presión a la misma hora todos los días.

•Siéntese en la misma silla y posición.

•No cruce las piernas y mantenga los pies bien apoyados en el piso.

•Descanse durante varios minutos antes de realizar la medición.

•Utilice un brazalete del tamaño adecuado para obtener una lectura correcta.

•Permanezca quieto durante la medición, sin hablar, comer ni hacer movimientos bruscos.

•Anote el resultado de la medición en el registro.
