ADDING ENGINE OIL

WARNING: Never overfill the engine crankcase. The engine may overheat and/or damage may result if the oil in the crankcase is below the “ADD” mark or over the “FULL” mark on the dipstick. For best results, fill to the “FULL” mark on the dipstick as opposed to adding a given quantity of oil. Always check the level on the dipstick before adding more oil.

Refer to the LUBRICATION TABLE in the MAINTE- NANCE SECTION of this manual to determine the proper type of oil to add to the crankcase for the conditions under which the engine will be operated.

Place the tractor on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Stop the tractor engine and remove the ignition key. Allow engine to cool.

NOTE: The engine has two oil fill ports: one in the valve cover which can be accessed from beneath the air cleaner hoses on the left side of the engine, and one in the gear cover on the right/front of the engine. Because the air cleaner hoses limit access to the valve cover port and necessitate use of an extended spout funnel, utilizing the front gear cover port is recommended.

Locate the oil fill cap in the front gear cover (or valve cover). See Figure 54.

Clean the area around the oil fill cap and dipstick to prevent debris from entering the crankcase. Remove the dipstick to vent the engine.

Turning it counterclockwise, unscrew the oil fill cap from the gear cover (or valve cover).

In stages, SLOWLY pour oil into the engine until the crankcase oil level reaches the “FULL” mark on the dipstick. Refer to Figure 53.

Insert the oil fill cap into the gear cover (or valve cover) and turn clockwise until fully tightened. Reinsert the dipstick and push firmly into the dipstick tube. Clip the dipstick handle into the retaining clip. Refer to Figure 52.

IMPORTANT: The oil fill caps and dipstick must always be installed securely in place when the engine is running. Severe engine damage could result from failure to do so.

CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL AND FILTER

The engine oil and oil filter should be changed after the first fifty hours of operation and every 150 hours thereafter. Refer to the LUBRICATION TABLE in the MAINTENANCE SECTION of this manual for the quantity of oil needed, and to determine the proper type of oil to use for the conditions under which the engine will be operated.

WARNING: Because the engine is run prior to draining the oil, the engine may be hot. Use caution to avoid burning yourself on engine surfaces.

Run the engine for a few minutes to allow the oil in the crankcase to warm up. Warm oil will flow more freely and carry away more engine impurities. Use care to avoid burns from hot oil. While the engine oil is warm, proceed as follows:

Place the tractor on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Stop the tractor engine and remove the ignition key.

Clean the areas around the base of the oil filter, an oil filler cap, and the dipstick tube to prevent debris from entering the crankcase.

Remove the dipstick and an oil fill cap from the engine. Refer to Figure 52 and Figure 54.

From below the right frame rail, locate the engine drain plug on the right side of the engine. See Figure 55.
