4 Installing and Using Application Programs

Installing application programs

Your computer has several application programs already installed, as well as some programs that need to be installed before you can use them. The programs that come with your computer include

mAppleScript, which allows you to automate any actions you perform repeatedly on your Macintosh

mDrive Setup, which enables you to initialize, test, and update hard disks and other storage media. Drive Setup lets you partition very large disks (up to 2 terabytes).

mPowerTalk, which provides built-in mail and collaboration services

mtext-to-speech software that allows your Macintosh to speak typed text in compatible applications such as SimpleText

mSpeakable Items, speech recognition software that lets you give spoken commands to the computer and have the computer respond by executing the commands and giving computer-voice feedback

You’ll find these and other programs in the Apple Extras folder on your hard disk. (Drive Setup is in the Utilities folder.) To find out if a program needs to be installed, look inside the program’s folder for an icon labeled Installer. If you find an Installer icon and want to use that program, double-click the Installer and follow the instructions on the screen.
