Battery-Conservation Tips

The amount of work time your PowerBook battery can provide before you need to recharge it depends on the equipment you’re using with your computer and the steps you take to conserve power while you work.

To conserve battery power, do one or more of the following:

mDisconnect bus-powered USB or FireWire devices when they are not in use.

mQuit open applications that you are not using.

mRemove CD-ROM and DVD-ROM discs when they are not in use.

mReduce screen brightness using the brightness controls on the PowerBook keyboard.

mPut the computer in sleep whenever your work is interrupted.

mIn Mac OS 9, select “Turn off the built-in display instead of dimming it” on the Advanced Settings tab of the Energy Saver control panel

You can also:

mSet the hard disk to spin down after a short time.

mSet your PowerBook to sleep after inactivity of five minutes or less.

To access your computer’s energy settings:

mIn Mac OS 9, use Energy Settings in the Control Strip.

mIn Mac OS X, use the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences.
