CHAPTER 10

SAN Components
This chapter provides an overview of a PowerVault storage area network (SAN), addi-
tional cluster maintenance procedures, and detailed information on the following
storage area network (SAN) components for the Dell PowerEdge Cluster
FE100/FL100 Datacenter Server configuration:
SAN-attached clusters
PowerVault Fibre Channel switches
PowerVault storage systems attached to a SAN-attached cluster

Overview of a PowerVault SAN

A PowerVault SAN is a configuration of server and storage systems that incorporates
dedicated Fibre Channel connections between the server and storage systems. A
SAN bypasses traditional network bottlenecks and supports direct high-speed data
transfer between the servers and storage devices. SAN storage may consist of both
hard-disk drive and tape storage devices that are connected through switches and
bridges to one or more servers or clusters.
NOTES: See the Dell PowerVault SAN documentation for more information.
A PowerEdge Cluster FE100/FL100 Datacenter Server configuration cannot coexist on
the Fibre Channel switch fabric with other clusters or stand-alone servers.
