Configuring Shared Drives Using the Windows 2000 Disk Management Tool

For disk configuration, Windows 2000 uses a disk management tool called Computer Management located at Administrative Tools—> Computer Management.

The following subsection explains how to use Computer Management to assign drive letters and format hard-disk drives on the shared storage system.

Assigning Drive Letters and Formatting Drives on the Shared Storage System

Windows 2000 Cluster Service recognizes the logical drives of the shared storage system only if the drives are partitioned, formatted using Windows NT File System (NTFS), assigned drive letters, and configured as basic disks (as opposed to dynamic disks). Also, the assigned drive letters for each shared storage partition must be iden- tical on both nodes.

To assign drive letters and format shared hard-disk drives, perform the following steps:

1.Click the Start button, select Programs, select Administrative Tools, and click Computer Management.

2.Select the Disk Management folder to display Windows drive configuration set- tings. If you are using the Disk Management tool for the first time, the Write Signature and Upgrade Disk wizard appears.

A list of all shared drives is displayed in the Disk to Write Signature window.

NOTE: If the Upgrade Disk wizard does not appear and the unformatted drives are not visible, verify that the updated HBA driver is installed and that the Cluster Service is not installed and running on another cluster node. If the Cluster Service is running on another cluster node, you cannot configure the shared storage disks.

3.Click the check box for each disk, and then click Next.

4.In the Select disks to be upgraded window, deselect all checked boxes.

5.Click Next.

The disk configuration information appears.

NOTICE: The upgrade procedure creates dynamic disks or volumes from the selected disks that can not be used by Cluster Service. Before you proceed to the following step, ensure that the disks are not being upgraded by deselecting each disk.
