Lors de l’abattage, respectez une distance d’au moins 2 fois et demi la hauteur de l’arbre entre l’arbre et la personne la plus proche (cf. fig. 17).

Dégagez dans un premier temps la base de l’arbre et la zone de travail des branches et broussailles gênantes et nettoyez la partie inférieure de l’arbre à la hache (cf. fig. 18).

Etablissez ensuite une voie de repli et dégagez-la de tous les obstacles. Cette voie doit être opposée à la direction prévue de la chute de l’arbre et avoir un angle de 45 ° (fig. 19). Il faut aussi choisir une seconde voie. Placez tous les outils et l’ensemble du matériel en sécurité à une distance suffisante de l’arbre mais pas sur la voie de repli.

Si l’arbre a de grosses racines latérales, coupez dans les plus grandes racines, d’abord verticalement puis horizontalement et enlevez le morceau ainsi découpé (fig. 20).

Déterminez ensuite l’emplacement de l’encoche d’abattage („camembert“) (fig. 21). Lorsqu’elle est correctement positionnée, l’encoche d’abattage détermine dans quelle direction l’arbre va tomber. Elle doit être pratiquée perpendiculairement à la ligne de chute aussi près que possible du sol. Coupez l’encoche d’abattage à une profondeur comprise entre un tiers et un quart du diamètre de l’arbre (fig. 22). Elle ne doit jamais être plus haute que profonde. Pratiquez l’en- coche d’abattage avec grand soin.
