D. CLEANING THE PRINT HEAD

It may be necessary to clean the print head nozzles if you notice reduced print quality, or if you suspect a nozzle has become slightly dried out or clogged. If the printer has been switched off for several weeks you may have to perform both the auto- matic and manual method multiple times.

Tips: 1. The 4100 will automatically do periodic print head mainte- nance to keep it ready for printing. However, this will only occur if you leave it plugged in and turned on.

2.Purchase a backup print head to maintain uniterrupted printing capability. Part Number 053451.

Automatic method:

1.Open PTPublisher.

2.Go to the Tools Menu - Choose Printer Properties.

3.Click the Clean Print Head button. Several cleaning cycles may be necessary. If you see improvement after the first clean, it is very likely that one or two more prints will clean the print head completely.

Important Note: Always perform multiple Automatic cleans before attempting to manually clean the print head. Manually clean the print head as a last resort. The nozzles on a print head are extremely delicate, manually cleaning can actually cause damage to a print head.

Manual method:

1.Remove the print head using the instructions in Section 5E.

2.Moisten a lint-free cloth with water.

3.Hold the cloth against the nozzles for three seconds. This will “wick” some additional ink

onto the damp cloth.

4. Wipe in one direction only.

5. Repeat the process until all colors appear evenly on the cloth.

6. Finally, clean the copper contacts on the back of the printhead and on the carriage.
