WARNING!
Burn danger from hot engine!
Allow engine to cool before removing
cylinder cover.
Cool the engine by allowing it to idle for 1. 2–3 minutes.
Move the ignition switch to the “O” or 2. STOP position.

Stopping the engine

Adjusting engine idle

The engine must return to idle speed
whenever the throttle lever is released.
Idle speed is adjustable, and must be set
low enough to permit the engine clutch to
disengage the cutting attachment.
WARNING!
The cutters must NEVER
engage at engine idle speeds! If the
idle speed cannot be adjusted by the
procedure, described here, contact
your authorized Shindaiwa servicing
dealer.

Idle Speed Adjustment

Place the trimmer on the ground, then 1. start the engine, and then allow it to idle
2-3 minutes until warm.
If the attachment rotates when the 2. engine is at idle, reduce the idle speed
by turning the idle adjustment screw
counter-clockwise.
If a tachometer is available, the engine 3. idle speed should be final adjusted to
the values in the Specification section..

CAUTION!
Incorrect spark plug installation can
damage the engine!
Disconnect the spark plug lead, and 1. then use the spark plug wr ench to
loosen and remove the spark plug.
If the spark plug is fouled or is soaked 2. with fuel, clean or replace the plug as
necessary. For spark plug specifications
see the “10 - 15 Hour Maintenance”
section.
With the spark plug removed, crank 3. the engine several times to clear excess
fuel from the combustion chamber.
Replace the spark plug and tighten it 4. firmly with the spark plug wrench. If a
torque wrench is available, torque the
spark plug to the values in the “Specifi-
cations” section.
Repeat the starting procedures for a 5. warm engine.
If the engine still fails to start or fire,
refer to the troubleshooting chart at the
end of this manual.
Squeezing the throttle increases Ŷengine speed, causing the clutch to
engage and operate the cutters.
Releasing the throttle decreases
Ŷengine speed, causing the cutters to
slow, and then stop altogether as the
clutch disengages.
Use a sweeping motion when cutting,
Ŷand vary throttle settings often.
Avoid cutting material larger than 1.27
Ŷcm in diameter.

Operation

Carburetor fuel mixture adjustments are
preset at factory and cannot be serviced

When the motor starts...

Open the choke by moving the choke 1. lever backward (toward the fuel tank).
If the engine does not continue to run, 2. repeat the appropriate cranking proce-
dures for a cold or warm engine.
When the engine starts, clear excess 3. fuel from the combustion chamber by
accelerating the engine several times
with the throttle lever.
Operating the throttle will automatically 4. disengage the fast idle setting.

If the engine does not start

Repeat the appropriate starting proce-Ŷdure for a cold or warm engine.
If the engine still fails to start, use the
Ŷprocedures for “Starting a flooded
engine.”.
