Now we calculatethe verticalnumericalvaluesof the columnsof dots, and enter them underneaththe grid. Each verticalcolumnis first dividedinto three groupsof eight dots. Each group of eight dots is ~presented by one byte, whichconsistsof eightbits.

That’swherethenumbersdownthelefi sideof thegridcomein.Noticethat them is a numberfor each row of dots and that each numberis twice the numberbelowit. By makingthesenumberspowersof two we can take any combinationof dots in a verticalcolumnand assignthem a uniquevalue.

Unlikedefiningin theStandardmode,youmustassigntheIndexTablewith the IBMmode.

This IndexTableis preparedfor the informationof each chamcterattribute data, such as character type (Normal 24-dot high, or 30-dot high block graphics),the dotpatterndatain thememory, andthecompressionmaskbit data.

Each characterrequires9 indextable data.

The first andthe secondbytes(ml andm2)indicatesthepositionof the first dotpatternin thememory.ml is thehighorderbyte, andti is theloworder byte.

Thethirdbyte,m.?,indicatesthecharactertypeandthedotpatterndatawidth in the memory.

If the character is normal, simply, enter the width of dot pattern in the rriemory. If your characteris block graptics, add 128to the width of dot patternin the memory.

Ourtelephonesymbolis normalcharacterandthewidthof dotpatternin the memoryshouldbe 25, so thisvalueis 25.

The fourthbyte, m4, indicatesthe printingattribute. Thisbyteindicatesthe characterwidthto be printed, andinformationof the repetitiondots for blockgraphicscharactem.

If yourcharacteris a normal character, add 192to the characterwidth.

If your characteris a blockcharacter, and it shouldbe printedas line draw character, add 64 to the characterwidth. If the blockcharacteris not a line draw character, this byte shouldbe the same as the characterwidth.

Ourtelephonesymbolis normalpicacharacter, sothecharacterwidthis 35, and this byte shouldbe 227.
