temperature-pressurereliefvalvebythemanufacturer.
Thevalve is certied by a nationally recognized testing laboratory
thatmaintainsperiodicinspectionofproductionoflistedequipmentof
materialsasmeetingtherequirementsforReliefValvesforHotWater
SupplySystems,ANSIZ21.22•CSA4.4,andthecoderequirements
of ASME.
Ifreplaced,thevalvemustmeettherequirementsoflocalcodes,but
notlessthan acombination temperatureandpressure reliefvalve
certiedasindicatedintheaboveparagraph.
Thevalve must be marked with a maximum set pressure not to
exceedthemarkedhydrostaticworkingpressureofthewaterheater
(150psi=1,035kPa) andadischargecapacitynotless thanthe
water heater
Btu/hrinput rate as shown on the water heater’s
modelratingplate.
Forsafeoperationofthewaterheater,thereliefvalvemustnotbe
removedfromitsdesignatedopeningnorplugged.
Thetemperature-pressurereliefvalvemustbeinstalleddirectlyinto
thefittingofthewaterheaterdesignedforthereliefvalve.Position
thevalvedownwardandprovidetubingsothatanydischargewill
exitonlywithin6inches(15.2cm)above,oratanydistancebelow
the structural floor. Be certain that no contact is made with any
liveelectricalpart.Thedischarge openingmustnotbeblocked
orreducedinsize underanycircumstances. Excessivelength,
over30feet(9.14m),oruseofmorethanfourelbowscancause
restrictionandreduce thedischarge capacityof thevalve,see
Figures10.
Novalveorother obstructionistobe placedbetweentherelief
valveandthetank. Donotconnecttubingdirectly todischarge
drainunlessa6”(15.2cm)airgapisprovided.Topreventbodily
injury,hazardto life,orproperty damage,the reliefvalvemust
beallowedtodischargewaterinquantitiesshouldcircumstances
demand.Ifthedischargepipeisnotconnectedtoadrainorother
suitablemeans,thewaterflowmaycausepropertydamage.
TheDischargePipe:
•Shallnotbesmallerinsizethantheoutletpipesizeofthevalve,or
haveanyreducingcouplingsorotherrestrictions.
•Shallnotbepluggedorblocked.
•Shallbeofmateriallistedforhotwaterdistribution.
•Shallbeinstalledsoastoallowcompletedrainageofboththe
temperature-pressurereliefvalve,andthedischargepipe.
•Shallterminateatanadequatedrain.
•Shallnothaveanyvalvebetweenthereliefvalveandtank.
