P5205 Instruction Manual 1
Getting StartedThis sectiondescribes the High Voltage DifferentialProbe and gives
instructions on how to install and functionally test t he probe.
Features and Accessories
The P5205 probe shown in Figure 1 provides a safe means of
measuringcircuits with floating high voltages. The probe outputsa
low-voltage, ground-referenced signal for display on instrume nts
with the TEKPROBEinterface (or any oscilloscopeor other
measurement instrument when used with the Tektronix 1103
TEKPROBE power supply).
To protect you from RF and high voltage, the case of the probe is
nonconductive, internally shielded, and isolate d. The internal shield
connects to earth ground through the output lead. T he case of the
probe and control buttons are isolated and double insula ted. This
protection extends up to the full input rati ng of the probe.
The accessoriessupplied with the probe meet the same safety
standards as the probe. You may use other accessories if they are
approved for the maximum voltage present in your a pplication and
have the same style and size connectors.
The P5205 probe allows clear and accurate measurementsof
high-speed transitions and provides excellent reje ction of common-
mode signals. Both inputs have high impedance and l owc apacitance.
Because ofthese features, the probe can safely measure thefast
voltage transients in switching power devices without dam aging
them.
Other applications for the P5205 probe include testing high-voltage
motor control circuits and line-connect ed circuits in switch-mode
power supplies.
