PRE-OPERATION CHECKS

If any item in the pre-operation check is not working properly, have it inspected and repaired before operating the outboard motor. Otherwise, an accident could occur.

Fuel

8Check to be sure you have plenty of fuel for your trip.

8Make sure there are no fuel leaks or gasoline fumes.

8Be sure the fuel hose is not being flat- tened or kinked by objects in the boat, and that there are no sharp objects near

it.

Oil

8Check to be sure you have plenty of oil

for your trip.

Controls

8Check throttle, shift, and steering for proper operation before starting the engine.

8The controls should work smoothly, without binding or unusual free play.

8Look for loose or damaged connec- tions.

8Check operation of the starter and stop switches when the outboard moter is in

the water.

Engine

8Check the engine and engine mounting.

8Look for loose or damaged fasteners.

8Check the propeller for damage.

Do not start the engine out of water. Overheating and serious engine damage can occur.
