MIB

An acronym for Management Information Base. It is a set of database objects that contains information about the device.

MII

Media Independent Interface, the standard interface for Fast Ethernet—similar to the AUI interface for traditional Ethernet.

Network Diameter

Wire distance between two end stations in the same collision domain.

RJ-45 Connector

A connector for twisted-pair wiring.

Straight-through Port

An RJ-45 port which does not cross the receive and transmit signals internally so it can be connected with straight-through twisted-pair cable to any device having a crossover port. Also referred to as a “Daisy-Chain” port.

Switched Ports

Ports that are on separate collision domains or LAN segments. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Protocol suite that includes TCP as the primary transport protocol, and IP as the network layer protocol.

UTP

Unshielded twisted-pair cable.
