The right display will also show your heart rate when you use the handgrip pulse sensor or the chest pulse sensor. In addition, during heart rate programs the right display will show a heart rate bar that shows your heart rate as a percentage of your estimated maximum heart rate (see step 3 on page 17 for an explanation of your estimated maximum heart rate). For example, if four to six segments of the bar appear, your heart rate is be- tween 60% and 70% of your estimated maximum heart rate.

To use the handgrip pulse sensor, stand on the foot rails and hold the handgrip pulse sensor with your palms resting on the metal contacts; avoid moving your hands. When your pulse is detected, the heart-shaped indicator in the right display will flash each time your heart beats, one or two dashes (– –) will appear, and then your heart rate will be shown. For the most accurate heart rate reading, continue to hold the contacts for about 15 seconds.
