Inspect the Precision Slotless Connectors (female)

Preci sion slotle ss female connectors are used to improv e accuracy. The sl otless conta cts are
not affected by the slight variations in male contact pin diameter. However, it is still
advis able to inspect them regularly for dama ge.
NOTE This is particu larly important when mating nonprec ision to preci sion devic es.

Cleaning Connectors

Clean c onnectors are essential for ensuring the integrity of RF and microwave coaxial
connections.
1. Use Compressed Air or Nitroge n
WARNING Always use protective eyewear when using compressed air or
nitrogen.
Use compressed air (or nitrogen) to loosen particles on the connector mating pla ne
surfaces.
You can use any source of clean, dry, low-pr essure compressed air or nitr ogen that has
an effective oil-vapor filter and liquid condensation trap placed just before the outlet
hose.
Ground the hose nozzle to prevent electrostatic discharge, and set the air p ressure to
less than 4 14 kP a (60 p si) to con trol th e velocity of the air stream. High- velocity streams
of compressed air can c ause electrostatic effects w hen directed into a connector. These
electrosta tic effects can damag e the device. Refer to “Electr osta tic Discha r ge” earlier in
this chapter for additional information.
2. Clean the Connector Threads
WARNING Keep isopropyl alcohol away from heat, sparks, and flame. Store in a
tightl y closed container. It i s extremely flammable. In case of fire, use
alcohol foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide; water may be
ineffective.
Use isopropyl alcohol with adequate ventil ation and avoid contact
with eyes, skin, and clothing. It causes skin irritation , may cause eye
damage, and is harmful if swallowed or inhaled. It may be harmful if
absorbed through the skin. Wash thoroughly after handling.
In case of spill, soak up with sand or earth. Flush spill area with
water.
Dispose of isopropyl alcohol in accordance with all applicable
federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
