Why does MediaSmart TV use Windows Media Connect?

Windows Media connect is supported and maintained by Microsoft. It is based on Industry standards (UPnP) and is widely used. It is easy to install, set up, and use. And it supports digital rights management, enabling access to premium online content.

What version of Windows Media Connect works with the MediaSmart TV?

The MediaSmart TV supports Windows Media Connect 2.0. If you have an earlier version of WMC, you can get a free download of version 2.0 from the Microsoft Windows Media Connect Web site.

Can my MediaSmart TV software be updated?

Yes, MediaSmart TV media firmware (software) is ready to updated as needed in the future by using the Firmware Update menu. See “Updating firmware” on page 76 for more information.

Can MediaSmart TV play AAC format and other music file types?

Your MediaSmart TV can play music files in MP3 format. For supported music file types, see “Supported Media File Types” on page 83.

What is the wireless type to use to stream video to my MediaSmart TV?

The quality of streaming video over wireless depends on many factors, such as the bitrate of the original video, the reception quality, and the access point. For best quality over wireless, HP recommends using an access point that supports IEEE 802.11a. IEEE 802.11g is the second choice. IEEE 802.11b access points work well for audio and picture streaming, but are not recommended for video because of bandwidth limitations.

How can I improve performance over wireless?

Performance over wireless depends upon many factors, including position of the TV and its distance from the access point, overall network traffic in your home network, and possible interference from neighboring access points.

The access point may have special settings that control multimedia streaming, such as channel, protection mode, and ACK mode. Changing these from the default settings may improve your wireless network performance; refer to your router user manual.

Can I play recorded TV shows or downloaded shows or movies from my Media Center PC on my MediaSmart TV?

Microsoft Media Center PCs record TV programs in a proprietary format called dvr-ms. Your MediaSmart TV supports playback of dvr-ms files. For supported video file types, see “Supported Media File Types” on page 83.

Can I stream a DVD movie from my PC to the MediaSmart TV?

No, because the MediaSmart TV can only access digital media exported by the media server (Windows Media Connect). Due to copyright and legal issues WMC does not export the VOB files used in DVDs.

However, if you have the DVD disc, you can play it through a DVD player you connect directly to MediaSmart TV. See “Connecting a DVD player, VCR, DVR, game console, or camcorder” on page 12 for more information.
