Master Server Application - A backup application serving as the master in a backup hierarchy is referred to as a Master Server Application. A Master Server Application is responsible for managing other media servers.

Master Host - The managed host that has the backup application running as the Master Server Application is referred to as the master host. The IP address of the master host must be specified in Step 1 of Discovery before the Master Server Application can be discovered.

Media Server Application - A backup application serving as a server controlling the media in a backup hierarchy is referred to as a Media Server Application. A Media Server Application can be responsible for managing different types of hardware, such as tapes and drives.

Media Host - The host that has the backup application running as the Media Server Application is referred to as the media host. A Media Server Application and its host can be discovered through the Master Host (similar to how hosts are detected through a switch). If a media host is discovered through a master host, the media host is considered to be generic, meaning that the management server has discovered it, but cannot obtain additional information about the element. If the IP address of the media host is specified in Step 1 of discovery, the media host will be considered “managed”.

Media - Media can be any device that is used to store backup data, such as tapes.

Media Pool - logical grouping of the backup media.

Jobs - scheduled and executed backup jobs.

Tape Library - a device hosting a collection of tapes.

Robot - an automated device inside the tape library; responsible for manipulating the tapes.

Backup Client - a Backup Client is a host being backed up by one or more master servers. A backup client can be managed if its IP address appears in the discovery list. Otherwise, backup clients that are identified through the master servers are considered generic elements.

NOTE: In Backup Manager you do not need to double-click an element in the topology to obtain more information about it. Only a single click is required.

Requirements for Using Backup Manager

Before you can use Backup Manager, you must do the following:

1.Install a CIM Extension on the host running the backup application. See the Installation Guide for information about installing CIM Extensions.

2.Discover the host running the backup application. Select the Include backup details option. See Step 1 - Discovering Your Hosts and Master Backup Servers” on page 93. It is recommended you also select the Include infrastructure detail option, so you can also monitor and manage the host itself.
