Administrator Password: Setting an Administrator Password deters unauthorized users from changing configuration settings. If you are responsible for maintaining the configuration settings of several computers, you might want to set an Administrator Password. For more information, see “Administrator Password” on page 76.

You do not have to set any passwords to use your computer. However, using passwords improves computing security.

Windows passwords

Depending on your version of the Windows operating system, you can use passwords for a variety of features, including controlling login access, access to shared resources, network access, and individual user settings. For more information, see “Help and Support” on page 111.

Setting up the integrated Security Chip

Depending on the model of your computer, the keyboard might have an embedded Security Chip, a cryptographic microprocessor. With the Security Chip and the Client Security Solution program, your computer will have a higher level of security across the local network, the enterprise, or the Internet. or the Internet. The following are the key features of the Client Security Solution program:

Secure data encryption to protect against unauthorized access to confidential material located on your PC.

Key encryption to help ensure privacy.

Note: Key encryption uses a pair of encryption keys: a public key and a private key. The public key and private key work together to encrypt and decrypt information. The two keys are also used to identify and authenticate users.

A key archive and recovery tool to protect against a hard disk drive failure or system board failure.

Convenient, secure storage of Web site and application login information using Password Manager.

Support for additional security devices, such as a fingerprint reader.

A means to recover a forgotten Windows or hard disk password.

An encrypted virtual disk drive, which automatically encrypts any data that is stored within the secure confines of this “electronic safe”.

A tool to view a summary of the security settings currently set on your computer.

Setting the Security Chip

The Security Chip submenu under the Security menu of the Setup Utility program provides the following options:

Security Chip: activates, inactivates, or disables the Security Chip.

Security Reporting Options: enables or disables each Security Reporting option.

Clear Security Chip: clears the encryption key.

Notes:

Make sure that the Administrator Password has been set in the Setup Utility program. Otherwise anyone can change the settings for the Security Chip.

If you are using the Client Security Solution program, handle the Security Chip as follows:

Do not clear the Security Chip. Otherwise, the functions assigned to the keys will be erased.

Do not disable the Security Chip. Otherwise, the Client Security Solution program will not work.

If the Security Chip is disabled, Clear Security Chip and Security Reporting Options will not be displayed.
