Flexible Program

In programmed auto, different combinations of shutter speed and aperture can be selected by rotating the main command dial (“flexible program”). All combinations produce the same exposure. While flexible program is

in effect, an asterisk (“*”) appears next to the exposure-

mode indicator in the top control panel. To restore default shutter speed and aperture settings, rotate the main command dial until the indicator is no longer displayed. Default settings can also be restored by turning the camera off, selecting another exposure mode, performing a two-button reset ( 136), or choosing another setting for Custom Setting b3 (EV step; 192).

Exposure Program

The exposure program for programmed auto is shown in the following graph:

ISO 100; lens with maximum aperture of f/1.4 and mini- mum aperture of f/16 (e.g., AF 50 mm f/1.4 D)

Shutter speed

The maximum and minimum values for EV vary with ISO sensitivity; the above graph assumes an ISO sensitivity of ISO 100 equivalent. When matrix metering is used, values over 161/3 EV are reduced to 161/3 EV.
