Digital Audio
Digital Audio is a s ound signal that has been
converted into n umerical values. D igital sound
can be transmi tted through mult iple channels.
Analog sound can on ly be transmitted t hrough
two channels.
Disc menu
A screen display tha t allows election of image s,
sounds, subti tles, multi-angle s, etc., recorded
on a DVD.
DivX®
The DivX® codec is a patent- pending,
MPEG-4 bas ed video compression te chnology
developed by DivX®, Inc. It c an shrink the fi le
size of digital vid eo and still maintain t he high
visual quality.
Dolby Digital
A surround soun d system developed by Dol by
Laborator ies that contains up to six ch annels
of digital audio (fr ont left and right, su rround
left and right , center and subwoofer.)

JPEG
A very common dig ital still pictur e format.
A still-pic ture data compress ion system
proposed by the Join t Photographic Expe rt
Group, which featu res small decrease in im age
quality in spi te of its high compressio n ratio.
Files are recogn ized by their fi le extension
‘.jpg’ or ‘. jpeg.’

MP3
A fi le format with a sound da ta compression
system. MP3 is t he abbreviation of Moti on
Picture Exp erts Group 1 (or MPEG -1) Audio
Layer 3. With th e MP3 format, one CD- R or
CD-RW can cont ain about 10 times more
data than a regul ar CD.

A

Analog audio
Sound that has not be en turned into number s.
Analog sound is avail able when you use the
AUDIO LEFT/RI GHT. These red and white
jacks send audio t hrough two channels , the
left and right .
Aspect ratio
Aspect rat io refers to the lengt h to height
ratio of TV scr eens. The ratio of a st andard
TV is 4:3, while the ratio of a high-defi nition
or wide TV is 16:9. The let ter box allows you
to enjoy a picture w ith a wider perspec tive on
a standard 4:3 s creen.
AUDIO OUT sockets
Red and white socke ts that send audio to
another syste m (TV, Stereo, etc).

Bit rate is the nu mber of bits that are
conveyed or processed pe r unit of time. The
bit rate is usuall y measured in some mult iple
of bits per second ( kilobits per second : kbps).
The term bit r ate is a synonym for data
transfer ra te (or simply data rate).

Chapter
Sections of a pic ture or a music piece on a
DVD that are smalle r than titles. A title i s
composed of severa l chapters. Each chapte r is
assigned a chapte r number that enables you to
locate a specifi c chapter.
