Al ajustar la apertura puede hacer que el fondo de la fotografía se vea más borroso o más nítido. La apertura está estrechamente relacionada con

la profundidad del campo (DOF), que se puede definir como pequeña o amplia.

La carcasa de la apertura contiene varias hojas. Estas hojas se mueven en conjunto y controlan la cantidad de luz que pasa por el centro de la apertura. La cantidad de hojas también afecta la forma de la luz cuando se dispara en escenas nocturnas. Si la apertura tiene un número par de hojas, la luz se divide en la misma cantidad de secciones. Si la cantidad de hojas es impar, la cantidad de secciones duplica la cantidad de hojas.

Por ejemplo, una apertura con 8 hojas divide la luz en 8 secciones; una apertura con 7 hojas, en 14.
