Los retratos o fotografías de objetos más aclamados son aquellos en que el fondo está fuera de foco y el sujeto se ve más prominente.

En función de las áreas de enfoque, una fotografía puede ser borrosa o nítida. Esto se llama ‘DOF baja’ o ‘DOF alta’.

La profundidad del campo es el área enfocada alrededor del sujeto. Por lo tanto, la DOF es baja cuando el área de enfoque es estrecha, mientras que es alta cuando el área de enfoque es ancha.

Una fotografía con DOF baja, que destaca el sujeto y hace que el resto se vea borroso, se puede lograr con una lente telescópica o si selecciona un valor de apertura bajo. Por el contrario, una fotografía con DOF amplia que muestre todos los elementos de la fotografía con gran nitidez se logra con una lente de gran ángulo o si selecciona un valor de apertura alto.

La DOF depende del valor de apertura

Cuanto más ancha es la apertura (es decir, cuanto más bajo es el valor de apertura), más baja es la DOF. Cuando los otros valores son iguales, como la velocidad del obturador y la sensibilidad ISO, un valor de apertura bajo da como resultado una fotografía con DOF baja.
