EMS (EnhancedMessagingService)
EnhancedMessaging Service (EMS) adds new
powerfulfunctionality to the well-known SMS
standard. With it, mobile phone users can add
life to SMS textmessaging in the form of
pictures,animations,sound and formatted
text.Thisgives the users new ways to express
feelings,moods and personality in SMS
messages. As well as messaging, users will enjoy
collectingand swapping pictures and ring
signalsand other melodies,downloading them
from the Internet or editing them directly on the
phone.
EMS uses existingSMS infrastructure and
industrystandards, keeping investments to a
minimum for operators and providinga familiar
user interfaceand compatibility with existing
phones and withother manufacturers.

EMS – more tha n just words

Sounds and melodies

EMS gives the user the abilityto send and
receivesounds. These can be pre-defined
sounds, such as “Chime high” and “Notify ”, or
melodies (ring signals in the phone), downloaded
fromthe Internet, received in SMS messages or
composedby the user on the phone keypad or a
PC.
Several soundsand melodiescan be insertedin
one message, andthey can be combined with
pictures.

Pictures, animationsand formatted

text

Phones supportingEMS include a set of pre-
definedpictures for inserting in SMS messages.
New picturesand animations are downloaded
fromthe Internet or receivedin SMS messages.
Picturescan be created and edited in the phone
using a built-in Picture Editor. Several pictures
can be insertedin one message, and they can be
combined with sounds and melodies. The users
can format textin messages with different styles
and sizes.

Concatenated messages

ApartoftheEMSstandardisthesupportfor
concatenated messages, which means that the
phone is ableto automatically combine several
messages bothwhen creating and receiving
EMS. This is useful to be able to build, and
display,messageswith rich content,since the
amount of informationin each SMS is limited by
the SMS standards.

New possibilities with

messaging

The EMS standardis now a part of the SMS
standardand supported by the major network
operatorsand mobile phone manufacturers. This
universal approach enables a fast penet ration
and developmentof new services and
applicationswithin messaging.

Creativity explosion

Users will be inspiredto create and swap their
own melodies and pictures.But more
importantly, professional content creators and
providersare already preparing to offer
imaginativeand creative contents for use with
EMS. Based on subscriptions, fees or ads,
networkop eratorswill be able to provide wide
ranges of ringsignals, operator logos and
corporate icons,as well as personal and mood-
relatedpictures and melodies. Movie, music and
gamecompanies can promote new products and
events with designer melodies,animations and
pictures.

Huge business potential

Network operatorscan now enhance their
services andattract more customers by offering
pictures, animations, ring signals and melodies
for download at their portals.Operators can
chargemore per EMS message since it contains
more data. Thereby EMS adds more value to the
operators and to the end users.

Increase SMS revenue

EMS uses thesame basic network support as
ordinarySMS, and with the same familiar user
interface. From an operator's point of view, SMS
is low tech because minimalinvestment is
needed to providean effective SMS service to
subscribers and little maintenance is required.
EMS will createadditional revenue for service
providersand network operators by increasing
SMS traffic.
