Mobile positioning
The geographiclocation of mobile subscribers
can be used to providethem with related
informationand a variety of services. Sony
Ericsson’s Mobile Positioning System (MPS)
gives operatorsa fast and cost-effectiveway to
establishand roll out location-based services.
For users oft heT68i, the integration of mobile
positioningwith WAP services means that a
completerange of service and information tools
is available.
Moreinformation regarding possibilities with and
technologiesfor mobile positioning is available at

General PacketRadio Services
Theintroduction of GPRS (General Packet Radio
Services) isone of the key steps in the evolution
of today’sGSM networks for enhancing the
capabilitiesof data communication. Data traffic
is increasingenormously (over both wired and
wirelessnetworks), with the growth in demand
for Internet access and servicesparalleling that
for mobile communications.Users want access
to the Internetwhile they are away from their
offices and homes, and surveys have found that
the vast majorityof business professionals want
thea bility to send and receive e-mail, browse the
Weband transmit text and graphics on a
portabledevice. That is why the main
applicationsdriving Mobile Internet development
are e-mailclients and Web browsers.
The demandfor high-speed Internet access will
be the key driverfor coming generations of
wirelessservices, and GPRS can deliver the
necessaryspeed. GPRS allows innovative
services tobe created, enabling new and
previouslyinaccessible market segments to be
addressedand increasing customer loyalty.
GPRS applications can be developed as both
horizontaland vertical.Vertical applications are
specific, including those for operations such as
reachingpolice and emergency, taxi, delivery or
automated services(vending machines,
supervision,vehicle tracking). Horizontal
applications are more generic and include those
for Internet access, e-mail, messaging, e-
commerceand entertainment.
GPRS is able to take advantage of the global
coverage of existingGSM networks.
Applications developed for GPRS can be
deployed on a large scale and can reap the
associatedbenefits. GPRS also provides a
securemedium for connections to private
networks, banking and financial se rvices.
WithGPRS, the T68i sends data in “packets” at a
very high speed. The T68i remains connected to
the network at all times, using transmission
capacityonly when data are sent or received. For
details, see “GPRS technical data” on page 63.
