Appendix A – Managing Configuration Files

Setting the Control Panel Password

Important: The control panel password can be set without loading the entire .xcl configuration file to the system, thereby retaining the factory configuration with the Device Discovery feature.

For Precis SD control panels, the numbers in the password correspond to the Level Keys (in order from left to right, the level Keys represent the numbers “0” to “7”). The Level Keys are used to enter the password for locking and unlocking the control panel. Locking the Precis SD control panel can prevent accidental switching by disabling control access.

The factory default password is the first five Level Keys (corresponding to the digits, 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4), going from left to right.

Using XNConnect, you can customize a password consisting of five digits between 0 and 7 that are entered on the control panel using the Level Keys.

For information on using the password to lock and unlock the control panel, see page 43.

The system must be connected to the PC running XNConnect before the password can be loaded to the control panel. If not already connected, complete the first five steps of the instructions under “Discovering a System” on page 47.

To set the control panel password:

1.In the Hardware View, right-click the appropriate front panel icon. (If the front panel icon is not displayed, double-click the Precis icon.)

2.Select Set Password from the drop-down menu. The Set Control Panel Password dialog box opens.

3.Enter a single digit between zero and seven (inclusive) in each field.

4.Check the box for Configure Password Immediately.

Important: If you use the Configure menu instead of checking the box, the only configuration option that will load password information is Configure Special - Hardware / Configure All Passwords.

5.Click OK.

The updated password information is immediately loaded to the control panel, and the new password sequence must be used to lock and unlock the control panel.

6.Using Save As (under the File menu), make a duplicate copy of the modified file with a new name and save it to the PC. (We strongly recommend making a duplicate copy every time the file is modified.)
