the RTC chip in NVRAM is erased each time the com- puter is turned off. Therefore, the system configuration information must be reentered and the options reset each time the system boots until the RTC chip is replaced.
To remove the RTC chip, follow these steps:
1.If possible, enter the system setup program and make a printed copy of the system setup screens.
See Chapter 4, “Using the System Setup Program,” in the system User’s Guide for instructions.
2.Remove the left computer cover.
See “Removing the Computer Covers” in Chapter 7.
CAUTION: See “Protecting Against Electro- static Discharge” in the safety instructions at the front of this guide.
3.Cut the cable tie that secures the chip to the sys- tem board.
NOTE: The cable tie binding the chip to the system board was necessary for shipping purposes. You will not need to replace the tie after replacing the RTC chip.
4.Remove the RTC chip.
WARNING: If the system has been running, any installed microprocessor and heat sink on the modules will be hot. To avoid the possibility of a burn, be careful when removing or install- ing system board components that are located near the microprocessors.
WARNING: Replace the RTC chip only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the equipment manufacturer to avoid the dan- ger of explosion. Discard the RTC chip according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
